The New Perspectives is Here! An exceptional accomplishment! Faith community nurses and spiritual care practitioners and leaders can be proud of this. I hope many will contribute...
The zoom meeting hosted by Rev. Dr. Helen Wordsworth is scheduled for this Thursday July 29, 2021. 630 Eastern, 530 Central USA- all you international folks please calculate the time in your area as early moring in Memphis TN is afternoon or evening in many places!
Hi Everyone!
Apologies that I’ve not been in touch recently. My mother deteriorated in health after our last meeting and died in late June. So I have been in the UK and we had the funeral service last Monday. I am back in France now.
We are due to meet again this Thursday at 11.30 UK time. Please find the link below.

I have attached the notes from our last meeting, which was full of helpful news and ideas.
Please take a look and check that I have included everything.
If there is something you would like on the agenda please let me know by Wednesday.
And please also continue to encourage people to do the census and to join the new yammer network. (Go to community.westberginstitute.org and request an invitation.)
See you on Thursday!

Notes from the World Forum Working Group Thursday 27th May 11.30 am BST (UK time), 12.30 French/German time
Present: Sue Bretheridge, Sue Duncan, Alicia, Anne, Angela, Sharon and Helen
After welcome and prayer we shared news from each country, including forthcoming online courses.
1.News: Sue D reported that the Canadians had organised a very successful and inspiring conference online. They now needed to get another course up and running.
Sue B was pleased with the online course that had recently been completed in the UK, and with the continuing interest from both churches and nurses. Main challenges…sustainability, and funding
Alicia’s online course had attracted 23 students from eight countries and was ongoing.
Anne’s plans were for an online course beginning shortly. They had developed an online community of practice with 8 people including Alicia. Major challenge is sustainability.
2.The World Forum session at the Westberg symposium is now available as a recording. For next year, it was suggested that Canada might be willing to contribute a special item…perhaps on the way that CAPNM works?
3.Further ideas for World Forum page of the Westberg website. Can it include the link to the World forum recording?
4. Strategy for World Forum development (see ppt draft 2)
4.1 Actions that can be taken this year to achieve some of these goals:
4.1.1 Promotion…Anne has five fact sheets that she is willing to share that could be of use in promotion. The introductory pack is free to churches, who can then access (for payment) the planning and documentation packs. Both with editable forms.
She has also developed a website called Faith Hope Health, which draws in a wider audience whose interest can then be channelled to the Faith Community Nursing website. It includes other initiative news like Mercy Ships.
We need to connect with theological colleges/seminaries, in order to introduce the concept there.
We should also look to being part of community health electives from colleges of nursing.
We need something by way of a neat soundbyte…ie “you need this role, you can’t do without it.” Perhaps with three scenarios, the young family, the child with health issues, the older adult with health challenges.
Canada have recently updated their website with a video to draw people in. (Can we do one for the world forum page?)
(N.B. There are new European security rules for websites because they need to be legally compliant for the movement of money, and board insurers also require this.)
In Germany, the steering group are establishing a constitution and hoping to launch this in September. Angela reported that the deaconess history sometimes makes it difficult for people to see Vis a Vis (Parish nursing) as a different initiative. Some people get it straight away, others don’t, and there needs to be more communication in German.
(Translation of the curriculum or other promotional material may be possible through grant writing, but first those who wish to access this must get a quote from their own country and expected benefits so that it can be passed on to the grant writer in SCA.)
4.1.2. Sustainability:
Guidance on this should be available on the website.
Sometimes a change of minister prompts the closure of a service, especially if they become domineering or micro-managerial.
The workload is heavy for nurses who are volunteers, and this may cause reluctance to continue or follow on from another nurse.
When nurses retire from the profession they often move to a pastoral care role which if not significantly different can lead to the impression that nurses are not needed.
There needs to be more emphasis on calling and the responsibility to adhere to nursing standards.
In Canada every new minister gets a book about Parish nursing.
5. Date of next meeting: Thursday July 29th at 11.30 BST (GMT +1)
6. Any other business
Chaplaincy and “Nurse-chaplains”: Sharon asked about whether nurses might be interested in cross-training with chaplaincy.
The feeling was that we are losing Parish nurses to chaplaincy because it tends to be a paid role and doesn’t require them to be currently registered nurses. The use of the title nurse-chaplain might help to address this, but it suggests a dilution of the role of a parish nurse. Chaplaincy is only a part of the Parish nurses’ role.
The Title: Anne mentioned that the title FCN or PN can be a problem if applying for secular funding. She has used “Health Navigator” in an application relating to homeless care.
