Faith community nursing, formerly known as parish nursing, is based on the idea that caring for ourselves and others is a manifestation of the love of God.  Through the practice of faith community nursing, nurses practice in a nursing specialty (faith community nursing) to provide spiritual care in their communities.  Those communities are typically faith congregations, but not always.  The goals of the work of the faith community nurse (FCN) are "the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities; the prevention of illness and injury; and the alleviation of suffering in the context of values, beliefs, and practices of a faith community, such as a church, congregation, parish, synagogue, temple, mosque, or faith-based community agency." (ANA/HMA, 2012, p.5).

The Center for Continuing Nursing Learning at Pacific Lutheran University is proud to offer an online experience for the safety of our faith community nurses.

Experience online presentations, small-group experiences, community interactive work and play, meditation, and creative workshops. Offered 100% online, this education course is designed to help the faith community nurse learn to model and promote health and healing. Dates: January 15 - March 19, 2022: SELECT SATURDAYS ONLY, and self-study. There are self-paced assignments during this time, which students must complete on their own.

Shendandoah University's School of Nursing is offering it's FCN Foundatinos Course this Fall. This course is a blended format with classroom and online work to complete the requirements for CE. It’s Units include spirituality, professionalism, wholistic health, and community. This Foundations of Faith Community Nursing Curriculum course is based on the curriculum developed through the Westberg Institute in 2019.

The curriculum is comprised of 15 modules presented in a pre-course assignment and throughout four days. Modules prepare FCN to serve in this specialized ministry in collaboration with the Pastor and or Administrator of their church. This course is offered on site or virtual...your choice.

Mercy Care for the Adirondacks will offer the Foundations of Faith Community Nursing course on March 11 & 12, 18 & 19 and 25 & 26, 2022 in Lake Placid, NY and virtually. This course is based on the Westberg Institute 2019 Curriculum.

The West Virginia University School of Nursing offers a Faith Community Nursing course for individuals interested in helping to address the unique needs of faith-based organizations. The professional practice of faith community nursing focuses on the intentional care of the spirit as part of the process of promoting holistic health and preventing or minimizing illness in a faith community. 40 contact hours is being provided by the West Virginia University School of Nursing. The West Virginia University School of Nursing is an accredited as a provider of Nursing Continuing Professional Development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

From 9 April-11 June, Health Ministries Network is offering a distant learning Foundations for Faith Community Nursing for active and retired nurses and a parallel Foundations for Health Ministry course for lay members of faith communities.   The course includes pre-course orientations, weekly online curriculum, and monthly Zoom webinars, providing a total of 38 hours of supported instruction and introduction into a welcoming health ministry community.  The Foundations Course is open to all religions, faiths and beliefs.  Nurses and health ministers serving diverse communities are encouraged to apply for scholarships.

The Advanced Spiritual Care Course is designed to provide nurses with advanced knowledge and skill when providing spiritual care to their patients. This is a 4 week all online course and has been approved for 20 hours of continuing nursing professional development. There are 4 learning module that include a mixture of articles, online resources, PowerPoint notes and recorded presentations. Students will interact with each other and faculty using the online discussion area. There will be an optional live zoom meeting the last week of the course that will allow students a chance to get questions answered.
